Through this experiment, I have
gained a lot of knowledge about the moon. One thing I learned was the cause of
our moon phases. The moon’s light is caused by its reflection of the sun. Half
of the moon is always receiving light from the sun, but its location compared
to Earth is what determines what type of phase is visible from Earth. One thing
I never realized before this experiment was the timing of the moonrise and
moonset. The moon rises and sets at different times everyday. The reason the
moon can rise at any time of day is because the moon revolves around Earth as
Earth rotates on its axis. This means as the Earth is rotating on its axis, as
the moon is moving too. Your position on Earth will not be able to observe the
moon at the same time everyday.
Trying to determine if the moon is
waxing and waning was a difficult task even as an adult. It is important to come up
with a way to teach a memorable method to determine the phase. I like to think
of waxing like waxing a floor. As you wax your floor or car, the item becomes
brighter. As the moon is in the waxing phase, it is becoming bigger and in
result becoming brighter. For waning, I try to remember that waning sounds
close to weakening. The moon is becoming
small in the waning phase, and the light is weaker.
